These are the different parts of a laptop and how they are related to each other, or how they can help you improve your performance on a laptop.Some parts are simple to remove and install; others are better to have installed if possible. This guide is meant as a starting point if you are looking to improve your performance on a computer, not as a definitive set of instructions. You’re still free to change and improve what you’ve installed if you feel it necessary or beneficial.

The design and function of the various parts of a laptop cannot be ignored. It is crucial to get a computing device which is both portable and highly capable. If you intend to carry your laptop around in your bag or pocket for work, you must ensure that it has an extremely solid and sturdy design. You should also ensure that it has excellent performance features and is packed with high-quality components.

So what are the parts? Well, there are both internal and external components of a laptop. Internal components include things like your hard drive and your battery pack; external components include things like your mouse pad and keyboard (or in some cases built-in touchscreens).

So what’s the difference between internal and external parts? Internal components are what you see when you open up your laptop. External components are what you see when you look at the front of a laptop.

The Processor (or CPU) – The processor is essentially the brain of your computer. This is the component that does all the work for your computer. It’s like the CEO of your computer, if you will. The Hard Drive – The hard drive is your laptop’s built-in long-term memory. This is where you save all your documents and photos and videos on your laptop, so if you lose this part, you lose everything on it. Many laptops now also have an SSD (solid-state drive) in addition to a hard drive, but for the purposes of this post we’ll only cover hard drives.

The Motherboard- This computer’s motherboard contains all the components required to run the CPU, such as memory and data storage devices (e.g. RAM and hard drive). The motherboard also has slots for upgrades to the computer like graphics cards or memory. It’s usually the steady beat of the motherboard that you can feel from outside the case.

The motherboard is also called a logic board, system board, mainboard or planar. It provides the basis for all other components in a computer system. It’s like its brain, since it controls and services every other component in the system. That’s why it’s sometimes called the ‘brains of a computer’ or ‘main board’. Every part of a laptop that is located below the screen is connected to this central part which contains all the essential parts required for its operations (e.g., disk drive).

The Memory – Memory is pretty self-explanatory; it’s the computer’s short-term memory that it uses while it’s processing information or running applications. The more memory you have, the faster your laptop will be and the easier it’ll be for you to do things on your computer. Most laptops come with either 4GB or 8GB of memory.

The Optical Drive – The optical drive (also known as the DVD drive) is what you use to play CDs and DVDs on your laptop. Laptops usually come with an optical drive (if a laptop doesn’t have an optical drive, then it’s probably a tablet), but if they don’t then you can always buy one separately. In fact, most people these days use external hard drives for their long-term storage rather than using CDs and DVDs.

The Graphics Card – The graphics card is what controls your graphics and visuals on your computer. This is what makes the video and images on your computer ‘pop’ while you’re watching movies or playing games on it. How much of a boost you get from your laptop’s graphics card will depend on which model you get and how powerful it is. For example, a laptop with an integrated graphics card (most laptops) isn’t that good for gaming, but one with a dedicated graphics card (usually for laptops with the Nvidia brand) will be able to make your games look completely different.

Trackpad – The trackpad is located in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen and is used for moving your mouse cursor around your screen. It also most often functions as a button when you right click on your desktop or activate an application’s menu. Some laptops don’t have a trackpad, but instead have buttons underneath instead.

Screen – The first major part of your laptop is your screen. The screen displays everything on your computer, so it’s important that it stays in good condition and there are no scratches on it when you purchase a new computer because they can get expensive to fix if they happen after purchase. Some screens also allow for touchscreens which are very valuable for touch-based apps or games, but at this point in time most laptops still have keyboard/mouse inputs so touchscreen features usually aren’t necessary.

Keyboard – Keys are the main input for your computer and a lot of people can’t stand anything but a full-size keyboard on their computer so if you are one who likes lots of keys, make sure that this is something that is important to you when looking for a new computer. The actual keys that go inside the keyboard also vary depending on your device, some keyboards have backlighting which allows the keys to light up and display easier in darker environments. Some others may be anti-ghosting which allows you to press multiple keys at once and still be able to use them all while typing on your device. Some laptops also feature chiclet keys which allow for a sleeker look and an easier input area to the computer.

Port – USB ports are another essential part of the laptop and they are used almost daily when you’re on your computer, whether it’s to charge a phone, transfer data from one device to another, or even just for entertainment purposes. The USB ports also vary depending on your device so make sure that you know what type of ports are available before purchasing a laptop because different devices may not be compatible with every single available USB port.

Battery – The size of your laptop’s battery will also be proportional to its lifespan between charges. This is because larger batteries take longer to charge and hold more energy than small ones. For this reason, if you plan on using your laptop as your primary gaming device or watching a lot of videos, it’s important that you’re comfortable with charging your battery every day or two before those activities are over.

Battery life is also largely dependent on the size of the screen you get, since larger screens require more energy to operate. If you plan on running a lot of productivity software and need longer battery life, it might be worth it to opt for a smaller screen. The bigger your laptop’s screen, the less flexibility you have when choosing a secondary display. For this reason, if you’re looking to play games or watch movies on your ultralight laptop but also want the option of taking notes in class, then a small sized screen is probably ideal for you.

In most cases, they will be used for forcing heat to leave the laptop through the use of a thermal compound in between the cooling fan and processor. This is important because if the temperature of a laptop starts to rise too high, it can cause malfunctions in other parts of the computer.
