How to clean a laptop

Many people often forget to clean their laptops and in turn, they are more susceptible to viruses, malware and malware. Some people freak out when they find these on their devices after weeks of infrequent use. A regular cleaning will get rid of most dirt and bugs that got inside your computer while also maintaining its performance.

There are a number of ways in which your laptop can get dirty, and this may lead to performance issues and even decreased battery life. Hardware manufacturers have suggested methods for cleaning laptops, but there are also some do-it-yourself methods available too.

Here are some crucial ways to clean a laptop

How to clean laptop screen

One of the first things to try is a microfiber cloth. Squeeze out the excess liquid, then wipe down the screen or keyboard with it until no streaks are left behind. If there are any fingerprints or smudges that won’t come off, then try spraying the cloth with a glass cleaner and applying it against the screen. Leave it on for 15 seconds before rinsing it off thoroughly. If you want to remove hard-to-clean stains like grease, leave your laptop out overnight in a good amount of sunlight. This helps warm up the surface so chemical substances will be easier to clean away.

Using a cloth and some water, you can easily remove dust from your laptop’s screen. In most cases, this will clean your laptop’s screen without any problems. However, if there is still dirt or grime left behind on your monitor after you’ve used a cloth and some water to clear it off, try using a can of compressed air instead. This will power through the deep-set dust particles and get rid of any remaining grime that might be disturbing your view. If this doesn’t work for you either, use glass cleaner or toothpaste to remove the stubborn grime before continuing with the other methods listed here.

Another method is the use of baby wipes for deep-fading dirty areas and dust particles that have become trapped inside your laptop’s cracks. Before attempting to clean your laptop, it’s best to take it inside. This is because some cleaners and sanitizers tend to bleed through the screen and onto the keyboard. You’ll also want to make sure it’s not too hot when you begin cleaning, as heat can harm delicate components inside of your laptop.

To make sure that you properly remove all visible dirt and contaminants from your screen, an industrial grade cleaner can be used with a soft toothbrush to scrub away at any stubborn stains. After using this, simply wipe down both sides of the screen so that no streaks are left behind.

How to clean laptop keyboard

A laptop with a dirty keyboard can be unpleasant to use, and in some cases may even lead to health problems. The portability of devices also means that they’re more likely to come into contact with potential contaminants like dirt, oil, sweat, spilled liquid, food and bacteria when you transport them around. Laptop keyboards are also more difficult to clean than those on desktop keyboards because the individual keys are not separate from the base of the keyboard as they are on a desktop keyboard.

To get started, you’ll first want to find a convenient workspace to work with, or at least one that isn’t in direct sunlight, and that has a smooth surface that won’t make it difficult for you to operate your laptop keyboard. I use an old office chair with my laptop on the ottoman in front of me, so I can move freely as I type. While we’re on the subject, it’s also good to have an old hardcover book handy as well if you have one lying around.

Next we’ll want to start by using a few paper towels to blot up any excess spills or gunk that may have made it’s way into your keyboard, especially if you’ve been eating or drinking close to the computer. This will make for easier cleaning. I usually start with a small wad of paper towels and move on to a clean portion of the towel or an additional towel as I work my way down the keyboard, so as to avoid getting my hands sticky.

You will also need small squirt bottle filled with warm water and a small amount of dishwashing liquid. You’ll also need a toothbrush, which doesn’t have to be a fancy one, but one that has soft bristles that won’t hurt your hands when operating your laptop computer afterward. Now if you don’t have a toothbrush on hand, try using an old one of yours that you don’t use any more for this purpose. As long as it’s clean, you’re all set.

To get started, take the bottle of warm water and the bottle of dishwashing liquid and shake them first before filling up your squirt bottle. You’ll then want to get started on wiping down your keyboard. At first I like to just take my toothbrush and begin scrubbing the keycaps off after a bit of dusting with the toothbrush, putting most of my efforts into those smallish keycaps, but that might have been unnecessary since keys don’t present much difficulty for cleaning with a dab or two of dishwashing liquid applied to each keycap.

At this point you can also remove many of the keys and either try to just wipe them off with a dry paper towel if they appear dirty, or to spray them down with some warm water and dishwashing liquid. You can eventually wash each keycap individually if you’d like, but in my experience there’s really not likely to be a lot of anything left on the glass that needs washing.

Once all the keys have been cleaned I like to pat myself on the back for success and call it a day. But if I feel like spending even more money, there are two other things I might try. The first would be the keyboard brushes that you can pick up at places like Radio Shack. The second would be a spray cleaner, which should make your work even easier.

How to clean laptop fan

Overheat laptops can lead to system crashes, data loss and hardware damage. Regularly cleaning your laptop’s cooling vents will help prevent these issues. Typically, there are five methods for cleaning the vents that we recommend for keeping the air flowing freely through your device:

  • 1) Use canned air in short bursts, starting at the bottom of your device and working your way up. Hold the can upright so that it doesn’t emit a lot of excess liquid when you press down on it for extra protection against liquid damage.
  • 2) Use a vacuum cleaner attachment with an extendable hose and brush attachment if you don’t have any canned air available.
  • 3) If you have access, remove the keyboard and use a soft brush attachment from your vacuum cleaner to clean out any debris in there.
  • 4) Purchase or make a high-powered air blower, which is a small, handheld tool that does not have any liquid or liquid residue.
  • 5) Clean your laptop using common household items such as an old toothbrush and water (don’t dip the laptop in water).

How to clean a laptop with water

Here is how to clean your laptop with water:

  • 1) Unplug the device, drain any water from the keyboard and turn it over on a flat surface.
  • 2) Use a paper towel to carefully remove any dirt or other substances from the keyboard.
  • 3) Wet a cotton cloth in lukewarm water and gently wipe down the exterior of your laptop.
  • 4) Allow to dry in an area that is free of debris.
  • 5) Turn it back over, shake out any excess liquids and plug into an electrical outlet before turing it on again.
  • 6) If something went wrong, wait for your laptop to be fully dried before attempting another step-wise cleaning process (i.e., you spilled water on top of your computer).

How to clean inside of a laptop

Cleaning is imperative in order to prevent these problems as well as ensuring the best performance possible. The worst case scenario is that your computer will become unusable and completely inoperable, which is the last thing you want to happen to your laptop. To avoid this from happening, follow the steps below and enjoy your laptop for a long time.

  • Step one: Remove all unnecessary items from inside the computer; at minimum, remove any transistors that could possibly cause problems later on when working with the motherboard. Be especially careful around those tiny screws in order to avoid scratching or worsening any damage that has already been done.
  • Step two: There are many ways to clean the inside of a laptop. A vacuum is one way, however, the power will not be focused enough to do this. You can also use compressed air from a can or a blower brush; however, you may need to buy those tools separately if you don’t already have them at home. Another way is to use an antistatic vacuum cleaner and/or cotton swabs that you wet with alcohol in order to avoid static shock; this is the easiest and safest way to clean your laptop inside and out.
  • Step three: Once you’ve cleaned all the surfaces that need it, put everything back together in reverse order of how you took it apart. Take extra care to ensure the connectors and screws are all lined up properly. This is imperative to avoid causing any new damage or having any internal parts become loose.
  • Step four: Once everything is fully put back together, boot your laptop on to make sure your computer works properly and that you didn’t cause any damage in the process. If you see a problem, then go back and check each step until you find the source of the problem; take special care to be gentle as you don’t want to have to do this again if it’s avoidable.
Cleaning your laptop inside and out may sound like a difficult task, but it can be done with only a few steps and some time investment.
